The SkinTRUST Society®: The New American Standard for Cosmetics and Everyday Skin Care Products

Founded by Dermatologists

The Facts
  1. Cosmetics and everyday skin care products are not pre-approved for safety or effectiveness by American regulatory agencies.
  2. Product claims like dermatologist recommended, hypoallergenic, sensitive, non-irritating, baby, non-comedogenic, natural, etc. are not defined or pre-approved by American regulatory agencies.
  3. Cosmetic effectiveness claims, such as reduced appearance of wrinkles or moisturizing effects are also not pre-approved by American regulatory agencies.
The Challenge
  1. Cosmetics and skin care products may differ significantly from brand to brand but currently there’s no way for you to distinguish between them. Did you know:
Some brands may adequately test for safety, while others may not. But both may claim to be safe.
Some brands adequately test for cosmetic effectiveness using scientifically valid and clinically relevant methods, while others may not. But both may make the same claims.
Some brands may use quantified and purified extracts, while others may not. But both may use the same ingredient name
  2. Products are more than their ingredients. Evaluation of products based on ingredients alone is not enough. Robust testing of the final product is necessary to ensure safety and efficacy.
For example, the pH affects safety and effectiveness. Ingredients may interact with each other or degrade over time.
Natural or organic claims on products don’t ensure that it’s safe or effective for people. Botanicals consist of a complex milieu of chemicals, and should also be tested thoroughly.
The Fix: Together
  1. SkinTRUST® Certified is the first comprehensive American standard for cosmetics and everyday skin care products.
The SkinTRUST® requires companies to submit robust safety and efficacy studies to substantiate their product claims.
The SkinTRUST® is led by physicians, clinical research scientists, and educators who are brand-blind, and have the collective ability to objectively evaluate the entire breadth skin care products.
